MLB Double Play Contest – Week 3: San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals Tie For Least Runs Allowed

lincecum-mainWeek three in the TMR Zoo Double Play Contest came and went, and yet again, we do not have a winner. It was actually a little easier this week because we would have accepted EITHER the Giants or the Nationals as the correct answer for least runs allowed since they both only let in 15 runs. It was the Arizona Diamondbacks who scored the most in week 3 with 49 runs.

Both the Giants and Nats played 6 games during our statistical week, but the Giants had to face the powerhouse Philadelphia Phillies for a 3-game series within that time frame. San Fran held the Phils to only 3 runs over the first two games of the series, winning both, and it looked like they would sweep the series as Tim Lincecum took a 4-1 lead into the 9th inning. Lincecum was pulled after letting a man on, but then the Giants bullpen allowed the tying runs to score, and then the winning runs in the 11th inning.

The Diamondbacks scored their 49 runs while playing all 7 games in week 3. They played the Phillies also, but the final game of that series was the first day of the week. The D-Backs headed up to Denver to play the Rockies in the thin mountain air and posted 26 runs in that 3-game series and then another 23 as they traveled to Chiacgo to play the Cubs.

The New York Yankees were the most guessed offensive team again this week, making then the most-selected team every week in the contest so far. 16% of entries had the Yanks, so their popularity is declining. Only 7% of members picked the winning Diamondbacks, none guessed the Giants or Nats along with that pick. Ironically, the D-Backs were the most popular pitching staff, also receiving 16% of votes. Even more ironic is that they allowed the most runs to score in week 3 with 55.

The Giants were the second-highest picked team, but again, nobody picked the Diamondbacks on offense with those entries.

Its now time to enter your week 5 picks. Entering the Double Play contest couldn’t be easier. Essentially, all you need to do is pick two Major League Baseball teams. Using the drop down boxes on the entry page, pick the professional team you think will score the most runs in the upcoming week, then pick the team that will give up the least amount of runs. After you’ve selected your teams, guess the actual number of runs for each category in the fields provided. Each week we will update you on the top scoring teams in the league as well as the teams that allow the least amount of runs.

To win the prize, you must correctly identify the two teams. The scores you entered will be used to break any ties in the Double Play. If nobody can guess the two teams correctly, then no one wins the prize and it rolls over into the next week… and combined with another prize. The longer we go without a weekly winner, the bigger the prize pack becomes. Check the main prizing page to see how big the pot is now.
