Earthquake in Japan May Cause Sony to Delay NGP Video Gaming Console Release Until 2012

Even before the earthquake, there were rumors that the upcoming new Sony Corporation (ADR) (Public, NYSE:SNE) gaming console, the Sony NGP, was going to be delayed to 2012. The recent disastrous 8.9 earthquake in Japan may have cemented the delay.

According to Gamasutra:

In an interview with Bloomberg, Tretton cited damage to several of Sony’s factories in Northern Japan, as well as shortages from other Japanese parts suppliers, in speculating on the production delay.

“It may be the straw that says ‘maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year,’” Tretton said of the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and accompanying tsunami that hit off the Eastern coast of Japan March 11.

Tretton had earlier stated that the Holiday 2011 release date was optimistic, and that it might only apply to one region (probably Japan) before a later, wider release.
