Surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear joined ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney on Saturday Night Live this week. The quartet banged out their new track, “Cut Me Some Slack” which is on the soundtrack for “Sound City — Real to Reel”.
“Sound City — Real to Reel” is Dave Grohl’s documentary about the infamous Van Nuys recording studio where Nirvana recorded Nevermind. Pre-Nirvana, Sound City hosted a whos-who of rock legends and was the birthplace of countless legendary recordings including Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumors”.
For the recording of “Cut Me Some Slack” the now defunct Sound City was not available. Still, echoes of the classic album Nevermind do appear. Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear took on their traditional roles as drummer, bassist and guitarist. Sir Paul McCartney rocked an over-driven 4-string Baratto cigar box guitar, and his lent his legendary pipes for the recording.
Rumor has it that Courtney Love is a bit put off by this Nirvana reunion of sorts. As you can see in the video the name Nirvana is never mentioned – but we know what this is. Hopefully next time around the boys will bang out a bit of “Come as You Are” and really push Love over the brink.
