For more than 35 years, AC/DC has represented the archetypal “big rock” guitar sound, setting the standards for countless bands to follow. In particular, Angus Young’s incendiary lead tone and mammoth rhythm crunch have inspired wave after wave of rock guitar heroes, and he has done it all on a Gibson SG Standard. The SG replaced the underappreciated Les Paul Standard in 1961, and while the Les Paul would surface later in the decade as a rock and blues classic, the new SG (originally named Les Paul/SG) was an instant hit in its own right. Its simple yet inspired ingredients of thin, all-mahogany body and neck and two Gibson humbucking pickups gave it a snappy attack with a muscular punch, and its slim, fast neck yielded unprecedented playability. Is Kid Rock Replacing Aerosmith Frontman Steven Tyler?

There are reports out of L.A. and Boston today that after 40 years Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has left the band. This would not be the first time in the history of Areosmith a founding member has left. Joe Perry and Brad Perry both left in the 80’s to peruse solo careers. Joe Perry did some of his best playing and writing after the break up with The Joe Perry Project. JPP released “Let The Music Do The Talking” and “I’ve Got The Rock & Rolls Again; both albums had limited success.
Aerosmith continued on with the release of “Rock In A Hard Place” with stand in guitarists Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay. “Rock In A Hard Place” saw a glimmer of Mtv airplay with the single “When The Lightning Strikes” but never burnt up the charts. Read the rest of this entry »

Fishman PowerBridge Hands On Review: Happiness And The Pursuit of Tone.
I have for most of my life been in one player guitar bands. I cannot say if has been by design or fate. Being the lone guitarist and having eclectic tastes in music I have relied on a diverse collection of guitars to paint a sonic spectrum of tone. One aspect of this spectrum is mixing acoustic and electric characteristics.
At one point I was using an ES 335 for this task. While the ES335 is a great guitar, it is not going to give you a pure acoustic guitar sound. The other drawback to the classic Gibson is the ES 335 is prone to feedback when pushed to the limits with gain. Read the rest of this entry »

TMR Music Review: Alice In Chains’ “Black Gives Way To Blue”
As you listen to Alice In Chains’ “Black Gives Way To Blue” good gives way to great. AIC’s first release in 14 years is an album worth waiting for. There are 3 components in my opinion that make AIC sound like AIC. The first crucial component for AIC to sound like AIC is Jerry Cantrell’s guitar.
Jerry Cantrell has never been a slouch on the guitar. Jerry has always had great tone and textures in his playing and writing. With this release it seems like he has somehow brought his playing to another level. In the opening song “All Secrets Known” there is a mixture of power chords and synthesizer like volume swells. The open track also features an Indian influenced sitaresque guitar solo. Read the rest of this entry »
Spread Eagle Vocalist Ray West Releases Solo Album
Former Spread Eagle Singer RAY WEST has released his debut solo album ‘All Pointz West’. The music is modern hard rock drawing influence from today’s contemporaries such as Korn, Killswitch Engage, and Rage Against The Machine. West describes the album as ‘melodic, soulful, and psychotic”. “In other words, this is not an 80s hair metal record”.
A FREE DOWNLOAD for the song ‘Novacaine’ is available at his new official site www.myspace.com/raywestofficial. ‘Novacaine’ was heard on the USA TV series “Burn Notice” and soon to be on FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” Read the rest of this entry »
TMR Music Review: George Benson - “Songs and Stories”
There are two George Bensons in my opinion. We have the FM radio smooth jazz George that gave us the hit “On Broadway”. On the other side of the coin is George the Wes Montgomery clone. The later named guy is the musician that gave us albums like “Giblet Gravy” and “Witchcraft”. When Benson’s latest release “Songs and Stories” hit my desk I was hoping to hear the latter George. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case.
Let me premise this by saying “Songs and Stories” isn’t a bad disk. It is a formula disk. It is classic R&B with great musician ship and beautiful vocals. Read the rest of this entry »
TMR Music Review: Stefon Harris And Blackout - Urbanus
Stefon Harris and Blackout’s “Urbanus” is a mixture or bop, fusion and New York cool on a backdrop of urban beats. Harris successfully blends classic grooves and tones with what can only be described as hardcore fusion.
There are touches of old school Miles in the recording; Miles during the Bitches Brew era. This is a departure from what you traditionally would expect from a vibraphone player.
Harris at one time was the captain of his high school wrestling team. In this recording he seems to be wrestling with identity. Read the rest of this entry »
TMR Music Review: KISS - Sonic Boom
Is it possible for a band to rip their selves off? KISS’ new release Sonic Boom nods to classic KISS in a frightening way. Though they are marketing geniuses KISS has always been on the trailing edge of music trends. Still they tend to get to the party in time to make an impact.
Case in point KISS’ disco anthem “I Was Made for Loving You” was released on the eve of the death of disco. KISS was also late getting to the hairband party. Still KISS was able to wash of their makeup, that is most of it and crank out some great hits. Read the rest of this entry »

Live Music Reveiw: Chickenfoot At Boston’s Bank of America Pavilion
It has been a big week in guitar for this writer. 48 hours after seeing guitar great Steve Miller I found myself in the audience of Sammy Hager, Joe Satriani and Chickenfoot.
Unlike Miller, Chickenfoot had only one CD’s worth of music to build their set on. The catalog of the combined musicians would easily be 50 or so albums. Their 63 year old lead singer Sammy Hagar has 22 records to his credit alone.
Instead or pulling from the archives of Van Halen this self described “Jam Band” preformed arena tailored versions of the songs on their new CD. Read the rest of this entry »
