I don't think I would bother with spin a split as a permanent mod. I would use it to figure out the value of resistor to put on one of the coils to make them uneven. Or just get a pickup with unbalanced coils and forget the rest.
I think it would be better to use a switch to do split and parallel coil. I've found parallel coil is more useful than split.
