Full Version: I suppose I'll do something guitar-related this evening.

Ring in the new year with mag swaps. Since I unearthed my tiny crock pot of wax, all my A2s are going back to A5, provided I have enough on hand: the RD Ugly Americans, a A2 498T, 490R. Even with the treble boost provided by my attenuator, they're just too dark.

I suppose buying new strings would have been smart but fuck that. I want my intonation all fucked up. It makes life interesting.
No idea why you would do that man ? Strings are an easier fix then magnets too. If you changed them more often then every couple years or so ? Fun is where you find it.Always liked A2s better then A5s anyway , about the only thing in this room with A5s is that godawful CV Strat.
I gave A2 a fair shake but I like the A5 sizzle.

No strings because I'm broke and Elixirs are spendy.
FWIW - In my limited experience, it seems like A2s need unbalanced coils to bring back the right amount of brightness and spank to be usable.
Just from my experience , I have only changed 2 magnets and both were A5 to A2 and both guitars were much better for the change. In no way could that ever infer that one is better then the other , just that it was in those 2 guitars. I find many A5 bridge humbuckers to be overly bright and of course that is what the tone knob on your guitar was made to address.
These were all A5 when I started, aside from the 490R. I just swapped to A2 on my last deployment because I was curious. I liked the results but once I went back to my real amp after the Behringer combo/Mode Four(yeah...that thing sucked), I've found they're a little dark, so I'm going back.
don't much like A2s. the mids are weird and the highs don't cut.
...and that was the big reason I went back to A5.
