As corny as this sounds - a phone book and a set of sticks.

Start paying attention to what the drummers are done my in different genres and mimic them.
Then you'll start locking with a the rythym of different styles rather than worrying able it chords and noyes.

they implement a lot of "walking" chord melodies in their music.

note how I "liked" almost every post so far, except yours?
REM? really dude? They are the furthest thing from soul and R&B! did you even read my post? :jerkoff::poop::nana:

sheeeeeet, I listen the fuck out of drummers dude. next to guitar, I often find drums to be the most interesting instrument/player in any band that I really love. But I get what you're saying about locking in with the rhythm section. From all the focused listening I did today of tons of old school stuff, that was one thing that stood out, guitars as rhythm dudes rather than for example joe bonamassa "playing R&B" and shredding like nobody's business.

I like locking in with the rhythm section when I'm jamming with other people. It's kinda boring when practicing at home though. I usually need something challenging when I'm practicing alone.

No, you need to go past listening and participate.
Beat out the rythym as you listen to the drums, feel all the nuances.
Then work that into your playing.
Notes just form the words, the inflections or rythym help shape the speech.

You mentioned chord melodies. My bad.

Don't overlook the songwriting. Do they rock? No, but the sense of timing is there.

Its like shredders learning rockabilly to add to the arsenal.

RE: I need some help - CTN - 01-05-2015

Yeah but rockabilly is technically demanding, as is bluegrass. You can't just pick that up, it requires serious dedication and practice to learn.

REM is suck.

There's lots a other places I can learn r&b/soul timing things :)

RE: I need some help - Big Flannel - 01-05-2015

You're born with soul. It isn't learned lol

RE: I need some help - CTN - 01-05-2015

I got soul brutha.

Cuz I'm not white.

Oooooh burrrrnrn

Srsly though. I know ii can really make this stuff sound good through my fingers. But I've never attempted playing this kinda stuff before so I just need to get used to it and learn up all the cues, references and cornerstones of the genre.

Try something way out there like Curtis Mayfield so not standard.
