An SUV driver slammed into a pedestrian in Queens Wednesday and then a passing van driver hit the body again and dragged it an incredible 17 miles to Brooklyn, police said.
The corpse's gruesome journey began when the man was hit while trying to cross 108th St. in Corona and did not end until the van driver finally noticed the body in Brighton Beach, police said.
Thinking he smelled something burning, the cargo van's driver pulled over once along the way, but did not discover the body until other motorists flagged him down on Brighton 10th Terrace an hour later, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.
"People were signaling him to stop the vehicle," Kelly said. "That's when the body is discovered under his car."
Investigators believe the dead man - whose body was too mangled to immediately identify - was trying to cross 108th St. near 51st Ave., when an SUV driver ran him down just after 6 a.m.
A maroon Chevy van was a few cars behind the SUV and its driver later told detectives he noticed that other vehicles were swerving to avoid something in the road, police sources said.
The van's driver, identified by sources as Manuel Gaspar Lituma Sanchez of Corona, thought they were trying to avoid a pothole and kept driving straight ahead - inadvertently picking up the body.
Investigators believe the body got stuck in the van's chassis, so when the driver of the SUV pulled over to call 911 that he hit someone, the victim had already vanished.
Oblivious to the body underneath his van, Sanchez got on the Grand Central Parkway a few blocks away and then drove south on the Van Wyck Expressway and west on the Belt Parkway before exiting in Brighton Beach.
"Oh my God, how could a body be dragged that far?," exclaimed Maria Diaz, 46. "That's terrible."
Detectives were quizzing both drivers, but no charges are expected, police sources said. Detectives think the man was already dead before he got stuck under the van.
Investigators were going to retrace the van's route to look for body parts and articles of clothing, police said.
"I don't believe it," said Joe Palmeri, 71, of Whitestone. "How could you not feel a body under your car driving that far? Just the initial hit you had to feel, right?"

Police: Ohio man held woman captive, read Bible

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Ohio police say a man held a woman captive in handcuffs and an adult diaper for three days while he read Bible passages to her.
Troy Brisport, of Toledo, is charged with kidnapping and felonious assault. Bail was set Tuesday at $400,000.
Police say he picked up the woman Wednesday night in Detroit and drove her to his home, about 55 miles away.
She told police when she fell asleep, Brisport handcuffed her wrists and ankles, gagged her, undressed her and put her in an adult diaper.
Court documents state Brisport tried several times to suffocate the woman using a pillow and blanket.
She told police she escaped Saturday after he fell asleep.
Toledo police Capt. Ray Carroll says it appears there was no sexual assault.

A married Chinese tycoon who could no longer afford to support his five mistresses during the credit crunch held a contest to decide which one to keep.
But when one of the women was eliminated because of her looks, she decided to take revenge - and drove her former lover and her four competitors off a cliff.
She was killed in the crash, while the man and four other women were hospitalised, according to the Shanghai Daily.
At first, officials believed the car crash was an accident.
Then details of the bizarre contest emerged in a letter left by the dead woman, a 29-year-old former waitress named only as Yu.
The woman met the entrepreneur, surnamed Fan, at the restaurant where she worked in the coastal city of Qingdao in 2000 and became his lover.
Fan later introduced her to the four other mistresses - two of his employees and two former clients - with all given a ã500 monthly allowance and rent-free apartment, the report said.
However, when Fan's business ran into tough times, he decided to lay off all but one woman.
He hired an instructor from a modelling agency to run a private contest where the women were judged on beauty, singing ability and capacity to drink alcohol held at a hotel in May.
The cash-strapped businessman did not tell the women about his intentions.
Yu was eliminated in the first-round beauty competition and a woman surnamed Liu eventually won after dominating the drinking round, the report said.
When Fan told Yu she was dismissed and that he was selling her apartment, she took matters into her own hands.
She convinced the group to go on a sightseeing tour with her before returning to her home province - then drove them all off a remote mountain road.
After the accident Fan paid Yu's parents the equivalent of ã60,000 as compensation for her death.
The other four mistresses left him - as did his wife once she learned of his affairs.

Rockers INXS have sacked JD Fortune, the lead singer they recruited through a reality show, with the star admitting fame drove him to drugs.
The singer, who was picked to front the group after winning the series "Rockstar: INXS," said he was now broke and living in his car in native Canada after being dumped by the band at a Hong Kong airport.
"I was in an airport at Hong Kong and literally got a handshake. They said, 'Thank you very much'," Fortune told Canada's Entertainment Tonight.
"I found myself really alone because I had traveled with these guys for 23 months.
"I don't know where I am going, from sofa to sofa, from night to night. I am trying to get through my life."
Fortune - real name Jason Dean Bennison - said his departure could have had something to do with his cocaine use.
"It got as bad as it needed to be for me to numb out the fact that I knew this was going to come to a screeching halt," he said.
