The 7 string I just bought has direct mount Dimarzio pickups. That means triangle ear mounts. Now, I'd be fine with that, but I don't know fucking shit about Dimarzio pickups. And, I'll be damned if I have to cut on a brand new set of Duncan's or Bare Knuckles. There's the rewind option but SD does that for a stupid amount of money, for non SD pickups.

So, does anyone have any suggestions? I need tight organic high output.

you could look into Suhr pickups. I believe they have triangle mounts also.

or you could look into DMZs.

I've played a few DMZs, and they are fine, well made pickups. But to my ears, they definitely have a sound of their own. I tend to prefer Duncans these days because Duncans sound a lot more like the tones I hear on records, whether it's old classic stuff or newer stuff.

I don't really listen to many Dimarzio users though, so their sound is not really something I go after.

I find Duncans have a more extended high end, with much more detail there. And also tend to have a bit more bloom in the low end, for the most part, whereas Dimarzios tend to be more about detail in the midrange, and a tighter low end.

Do you know if Lundgren's have a diect mount option? If so, that'd be the ticket.

I'm trying to find my jumping point to get into dimarzios so I feel ya.

another suggestion...

get whatever new duncans you want...

also get a set of baseplates from mojotone (make sure you get the right polepiece spacing)

transplant the coils, magnet etc to the mojotone baseplates, and cut the tabs on those. If you ever need to sell the duncans, just transplant them back to the original baseplates.

orrrrrrrr...

Modify the routes to accept conventional 'bucker mounting tabs.

And then the world (of all 7 string pickups) is your oyster....with perhaps the exception of the soapbar housings

Well I just found out that Bare Knuckles has a tri tab option, so if I scrape up the dough I might just get a nailbomb or warpig for the bridge position.

I'm also considering the dimarzio Ionizer but I'm not sure how that would work for what I want.

I have them with both types of mounts - my most recent (bought new and still unmounted) is a triangle mount. Ask before you buy.

What GV said. Personally I'd much rather just remove some wood than cut any amount of metal.

Dremel the sucker with a rotary sanding bit for a couple minutes total and you're set.

I love Dimarzios I have them in two guitars. I would play the pickups for a while to see if they offend your ears so much you have to remove them. You may be pleasantly surprised.
