What are U Guise... - lreese - 11-22-2014

Using for recording?

I want to purchase a new microphone - easy thing is just to get another SM57 but want to look at other options.

Have a couple of mic preamps and a Presonus Firebox. Also a SM57 and cheap ass mic stand.

I now have a Stereo setup so need to capture 2 sources. Ideas?

I use an Sm57, or an audio technica at2035, into a focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and reaper as my DAW.

Rodes are reasonably good and affordable.
AKG has the C214 which is studio grade but also affordable within reason.

General use - Mainly miking cabs. Seems like the 57 is the way to go.

Right now cheaper is better, but not penny wise/pound foolish.

+1. SM57s are great for guitars.

If you just want more guitar mics but different flavour than the SM57, check out the Sennheiser MD421 and e609/e906

e609s are good for cabs also, more for rhythm. They're a bit scooped in the mids, but you can control their frequency response by changing the distance from the cab.

There is a great mic on sale at MF, the TSM411. It sounds like a SM57 with a wider range and more pronounced midrange. They go for $89 but MF has them on sales for $29. I bought one and went back today to buy a second one. I haven't recorded with it yet but it sounds great live.
