This is a fairly alien subject to me.
As some of you may know, my new CPU is being shipped and after assembly I should have a prettt righteous setup. I've been looking at recording options and would like to know which solutions work best for you.
Alot of the products I've seen have amp modeling, (meh), and the ability to add effects in post lole reverb/delay (which is a capability I think I'd like).
Do you guys mic your amp and run it through your plug-in or what?
Very detailed responses are welcome considering that I have no clue about any of this.

I have an old presonus firewire thing I'll just give you. I used to mic my amp with that.

We can always go to Chucks and use the jam room and his Tascam 8 track is not a problem at all. Way closer for Formula 73 too. I am against any kind of modeling anything , multi effect and really hate the Pro Tools mindset. I believe in live recording , play it like you play it.If music was meant to be perfect we would only have robots playing. I just mic and record into Audacity or use the redbox out on the Tonemiester into what ever device being used to record.

Actually, that's what I'm going to use when I get around to setting it all up. The 2nd mic came in last Friday.

if I'm going for a quick demo, I plug my guitar in direct, and use an amp and cab modeler for higher gain sounds. They don't do so well with low gain.
But ordinarily, I prefer to just mic my amp/cab and use as little after-the-fact processing. At most I'll put an EQ plugin on the guitar track to cut some of the fizz and extraneous low end, maybe emphasize a few frequencies to help it cut through the mix a bit better.
I have a delay pedal on my pedalboard so I sometimes use that for lead sounds, but it's usually cleaner to record a totally dry signal and then add a delay or reverb plugin on the track in your recording program.
Another option is using an amp's direct out or line out, into your interface. The gain sounds will suck ass... UNLESS you put it through a cabinet/speaker modeler. Then you get a much more realistic amp sound that is actually useable.

Depends on our amp and whaou want oacheve with the hardware in question. If your amp has no line out or fx loop send or DI output of any sort, youu could get an attenuator with a line out, and use that straight into your recording interface. Thaat would allow you to get a direct signal into your computer rregardless of volume/attenuation.

The reason I ask is because I'm gwtting all this stuff for the add-a-track. Nobody will care for my playing but you said "make it you" and the Hovercraft is me. Nothing else will work lol.

then just get an sm57, an xlr cable, and an interface with a decent mic preamp.
there's plenty of good cabinet micing tutorials/vids on youtube.

I have recording you covered Devon if we go to Chucks and do it.No problems at all there, I have been working on that room for a couple years now and slowly but surely it is coming together nicely.
