Why do I hear something different ?

I was listening to S.A.T.O. and looking at some vids of people playing it even lessons and it seems to me like I hear something different then everyone I have looked at so far? There is a run that goes right up to the start of the lead and to me it sounds like a straight diminished scale and they all are playing it as a sort of pentatonic run. If you didn't know it already , I try and avoid playing things from my favorite players it just sort of takes away from listening for me. Just remembered a former friend learning that song by ear when it came out.

I also just realized there is just about zero reasons for me to learn how to play any song.
