Yeah it sounds like it does the trick for the low strings on 7/8 string guitars, but the other strings are a bit of a compromise.

Seriously tho you already got a bunch of good suggestions, I'd suggest going with an x2n to start off with to bludgeon your preamp like you originally wanted. It is a great pickup that IMO all metal guitarists or ppl who like tons of preamp drive should try.
I think there's one or two in the sdugf trading post actually
