Political correctness strikes again.
A notion is sweeping the globe that, for any given country, the proportion prison inmates of any particular ethnic group should directly reflect the proportion of that ethnic group living within that country.
The reality is that there is always likely to be a (seemingly) disproportionate representation of;
1) young
2) male
3) financially disadvantaged
4) educationally challenged
This is for the simple reason that these are the individuals most likely to resort to criminal behaviour.
If ethnic minority citizens seem proportionally over-represented, this suggests that a disproportionately high number of them are being convicted. The two likeliest explanations for this phenomenon are:
EITHER gross bias on the part of the local legal system.
OR that such people are committing a disproportionately high proportion of the crimes that attract prison sentencing.
It is possible that both explanations are true. i.e. The Australian national government has wilfully made some indigenous cultural practices unlawful.
