My dumbest, most expensive purchase to date is my time share in Florida. At the time, it was a great idea, and we even used it and traded the weeks a few times. But then I moved out of Florida and it became harder to use and even harder to trade. I've lost more weeks than I can count.
Then, to make it worse I've found a super cheap Veteran's Vacation Club where they buy unused timeshare weeks from these places and sell them to veterans at a fraction of the cost for the week, with no membership fee or maintenence fees. We went to St. Thomas a few years ago for $249 for the week and stayed in a great place.
