In that situation you're not wrong at all.

The thing that grosses me out is at a grocery store or department store when I see someone not wash their hands, especially after coming out of a stall. I always save the paper towel I dry my hands with to open the bathroom door.

Those doors should open outward so they can be kicked open, I don't want to touch the handle with my clean hands.
