Ive had projectors for about 10 years now. If it is a primary room, I wouldnt recommend it since the light levels need to be low and doing anything else while you are watching becomes a pain in the ass. However, if it is a room where all you will be doing in there is watching movies, tv or games on, it is worth considering.
We currently have the Acer H5360. It looks great and is BRIGHT compared to previous models Ive had. My son loves gaming on it and movies look great. It is 3D ready so with some additional equipment you'll have 3d capabilities as well. Nothing shuts the kids up and hypnotizes them like a Movie in 3D. (is that bad parenting?)
I've done both... just shot it on a blank wall and onto a screen. I actually preferred the wall. You can even tweak the projector to render color correctly on an off-white or light colored wall.
