Yeah I'll agree about some of the song choices being questionable....
For example, out of the whole list of "extra" songs, I only recognized 2 of them. Also, there are some songs that were included that may have been known and popular, but were no fun to play. Some of the songs just flat out sucked, to play and listen to. I also believe this has to do with the developer change... Activision has it's own relationship with licensed soundtracks (look at the Tony Hawk franchise). But I think Harmonix has the better concept of what makes for a good "music" game. Their songs (like on GH2) were all fun to play, whether they were known or not.
You are right though.... It feels like GH3 went towards the hardcore, being difficult for the sake of being difficult, and leaving the fun aspect a bit on the side. That's why I'd suggest Rock band as a much better alternative.
(I also don't know what system you're playing on... but the Rock Band downloadable content is miles ahead of what Guitar Hero is offering. And all RB downloadable content will be compatible with all of their future releases.)
