for me it's not so much about the look as it is half design, half woods.
I don't much care for the sonic feel of a set neck. The whole instrument tends to resonate differently than a bolt-on (which is what I prefer). And I don't really gel with mahogany all that well either. I find it too congested sounding in the mids. Maybe I just haven't played the right kind of mahogany guitar, but all the ones I have played (including the axes I've actually owned), I haven't been able to feel that "special connection" with.
I actually really like the look of LPs, but overall they're just too awkward, cumbersome and weird sounding to my ears to bother with them.
