Start paying attention to what the drummers are done my in different genres and mimic them.

sheeeeeet, I listen the fuck out of drummers dude. next to guitar, I often find drums to be the most interesting instrument/player in any band that I really love. But I get what you're saying about locking in with the rhythm section. From all the focused listening I did today of tons of old school stuff, that was one thing that stood out, guitars as rhythm dudes rather than for example joe bonamassa "playing R&B" and shredding like nobody's business.
I like locking in with the rhythm section when I'm jamming with other people. It's kinda boring when practicing at home though. I usually need something challenging when I'm practicing alone.
