Is the Floyd Rose bridge obsolete?
I say yes - sort of.
Its not that its still not a viable design - In certain applications its still the only way to go (along with Kahler). I'm thinking Les Pauls and Jacksons with the tilt back headstock and a string pull that is not straight. Say what you will, but they are pretty complicated designs - but when set up properly, they are deliver what is promised.
Heck, other obsolete designs still work well. Lots of people still love the original Fender vibrato bridge from the 50s.
Floyd himself designed an 'improvement' in the 90s, after the advent of the Wilkinson nut and locking tuners.

Too bad it used a lot of cast parts. I think Fender missed an opportunity when it brought back the non-fine tuner Floyd on the Guthrie Charvel.
A milled version (and revised design) of the above would have opened a new market to people wanting to upgrade their American Standards/Plus guitars.
Flame away boyz!
