Mark III's seem to be going for around $1000, and after further research it looks like it would do fine. All I want is that high gain in the vein of the MkIIC+.
From what I can tell, red or blue stripe MkIII's deliver it in spades. Heck, the red stripe ones have nearly identical lead circuit to the mkIIc+, according to Wikipedia.
