Memo to NFL players: Watch what you say to your teammates. They may be wearing hidden microphones.

That’s a lesson that Matt Leinart apparently learned the hard way, as he reportedly ripped the Cardinals and their coaching staff during a preseason game while talking to a teammate who, unbeknownst to Leinart, was wearing a microphone designed to capture the sounds of the game.

Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic reports that the teammate (whom Bickley doesn’t name) asked Leinart about his future in Arizona, and that Leinart let loose on the organization and head coach Ken Whisenhunt.
It’s not clear exactly what Leinart said, and it doesn’t sound like it had anything to do with the Cardinals’ decision to release Leinart shortly thereafter — it was Leinart’s shoddy play on the field, not his comments on the sideline, that led to the Cardinals sending him packing.

But the story could be a lesson for us all — it’s probably not a good idea to badmouth your boss if you want to keep your job.

The biggest bust in NFL history could be getting the boot in Oakland again.

JaMarcus Russell(notes) is facing foreclosure on his $2.4 million Bay Area mansion after failing to pay the mortgage. According to TMZ (which managed to secure some documents about the foreclosure in between all of its Charlie Sheen coverage), the former No. 1 pick owes nearly $200,000 in back payments.

Now, I'm not privy to the financial statements of Mr. Russell, but his history of decision-making doesn't bode well for his chances of covering the debt. (Unless he has some stock in Robitussin that all of a sudden skyrockets.) He hasn't been on an NFL roster for eight months, his workouts with teams like the Redskins and Dolphins have been unsuccessful, and he refuses to play for any football team that isn't in the NFL. The only thing that's gone right for him in the past few months is that he wasn't indicted on charges of possessing codeine syrup without a prescription. (It belonged to someone else, you see.)

Upon getting drafted by the Raiders, Russell signed a contract worth $32 million guaranteed. If he doesn't pay the $195,512.05 he owes in the next three months, he'll lose the house.

$200,000? Shall we take up a collection for him?

He'll probably buy much cheaper real estate when he gets to Miami.

Kansas City Chiefs veteran Mike Vrabel arrested for theft

http://www.rr.com/sports/topic/article/r...l_arrested

The rather odd NFL offseason continues as yet another player has run into trouble with the law and this one is rather unexpected. Kansas City Chiefs veteran linebacker Mike Vrabel was arrested on Monday afternoon for theft at a Florence, Indiana casino.

Vrabel was arrested at the Belterra Casino Resort & Spa on the lowest level of felony crime in Indiana, a Class D felony charge. He was released on Monday morning after posting a $600 bond.

He was arrested at 5:30 AM on Monday morning and released on bond sometime hear 11:00 AM. If convicted, the crime carries a penalty of six months to three years in jail along with a fine up to $10,000.

An Indiana gaming agent stated that he saw Vrabel taking "bottles of alcohol from a deli" in the casino without paying for them.

"It was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and I take full responsibility for the miscommunication," Vrabel told ProFootballTalk.com in a statement through his agent Neil Cornrich. "I feel comfortable that after talking with the appropriate parties, we will resolve this matter."

The Kansas City Chiefs released a statement later in the day regarding Vrabel's arrest.

"We are aware of the reports regarding Mike Vrabel, but we are not permitted to have contact with Mike at this time," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We understand that Mike has communicated publicly that the matter is a misunderstanding for which he takes full responsibility. We hope it is resolved for Mike in a positive way."

Vrabel is one of the 10 players named in the NFLPA's antitrust lawsuit against the NFL and has been an avid and vocal member of the NFLPA.

RB Mendenhall causes stir with bin Laden tweets

http://www.rr.com/sports/topic/article/r...den_tweets

PITTSBURGH — Rashard Mendenhall has created a stir with comments made on his official Twitter page regarding Osama bin Laden's death. The Pittsburgh Steelers running back on Monday tweeted: "What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We've only heard one side..."

Mendenhall didn't hold back, even making a reference to the Sept. 11 attacks.

"We'll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style."

The Steelers felt compelled to act. On Tuesday, team president Art Rooney II released a statement.

"I have not spoken with Rashard, so it is hard to explain or even comprehend what he meant with his recent Twitter comments. The entire Steelers organization is very proud of the job our military personnel have done and we can only hope this leads to our troops coming home soon."

Mendenhall, who profiles himself as a "conversationalist and professional athlete" on his Twitter page, turned some heads in March, as well, when he supported a comment by Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson comparing the NFL to "modern-day slavery."

"Anyone with knowledge of the slave trade and the NFL could say that these two parallel eachother," Mendenhall posted at the time.

Mendenhall is coming off a tremendous season, as he led the AFC champions in carries (324), rushing yards (1,273) and rushing touchdowns (13). He has 2,439 yards in three seasons since being drafted in the 2008 first round out of Illinois.

In the 2010 postseason, Mendenhall ran for 230 yards on 61 carries in three games with four touchdowns, as Pittsburgh defeated the Baltimore Ravens (31-24) and New York Jets (24-19), before falling to the Green Bay Packers 31-25 in the Super Bowl.
