What causes this?

Yes, it's a screenshot. Today the screen is perfectly clear.dunno

I got a bottle of Cheez Whiz. Then I noticed we had a box of Ritz crackers on the counter. Next thing I knew the Cheez Whiz bottle and the cracker box were both empty.
Because I said so.

OK, it sounds like it has a fault/faulty component. Hardware problem.
If you haven't;
Brand/model: match these with the manufacturers drivers and install them to ensure maximum functionality between it and the PC .

Alternately.
How old is it ? If it's five or so years old I suggest retiring it for a newer one. They're relatively cheap these days for what you get for your $.

It very well could be a loose connection, but I'm not sure why. Both adapters are screwed into the connection.

Yet the other day I wiggled the connector to the monitor and it got better. :(

Cleaning the the adaptors and plugs with contact cleaning fluid might help that. The pins slowly oxidise and create a film that blocks your electrical signal. This is worse if you live in high humidity areas.
Something in a spray can is best for applying the fluid.

No need to be fussy about what brand you get, most of them work the same.
