Slowin' Down...
#1
Man, beat up at work Sat-Tues...  Now, I guess people are slacking for good Friday...  ;)

So another round of work on the old D-28R while waiting for work to come in.   Action was almost perfect during the winter - like a .075 to .095 at the 13th fret.  Humidity stayed decent during that period without humidification.

Fast forward to 15th of March...  Pull it back out - Action raised to about .105 on the Low E...  It can be normal, but suspect I might need to have braces checked again (got to get a little binding fixed too).

I chewed down the nut and reshaped the angle towards the peghead - Didn't polish it, but knocked it down with 1500 grit - I had set the heights back in the winter, so no need for that.  Probably got .020 to .030 off the thing.  Wound strings are sticking out of the slot as they shoud be, plains slightly buried.

A shiny new set of custom light strings came today, down from Light.  Did a slight true up of the saddle bearing down on the B and E side, but only meant to take a little off.  Boom - .070 to 090.  Good enough for the Summer!

I'm probably taking this one back to the guy who originally refretted the guitar or seek out a Martin specialist.  There were a few braces that needed a little glue during the refret.  As far as I can tell, no need for neck reset - gotta account for the fallaway that the refret did not take care of so resting a straighedge flat on 8 through 15 is ever so slightly proud of the bridge.

The Custom Lights might be the ticket - Weather's still playing with the action, but the AC's on now. Got a little more height, but only a few thousandths. Also needed to relieve the truss rod a little.

Anyway - I can't tell a difference in tone. Its loud and strong like the lights. I'm using coated strings on this one - Martin Lifespan SP.

81.3 degrees farenheit - sometimes a little higher and about 48% humidity. Getting another duct installed in the office hopefully this week so both numbers should drop a little.

Straight from Martin:

Quote:C. F. Martin recommends that you keep your instrument’s humidity level between 45-55% and temperature between 72-77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Working on getting the room down closer to the upper range of temperature - but humidity is right on.
