It does seem rather pointless.
I am reading John Irving's novel "Until I Find You". The protagonist is a Hollywood actor whose mother, a tattoo artist, dragged him through the ports and red light districts of Europe when he was four years old. She was searching for his father, a church organ tuner addicted to tattoos and women.
I learned a lot about tattooing. And church organs.
