Though she already has three children, Annette Morales Rodriguez desperately wanted another with her current boyfriend, so desperately she took a child from a stranger's womb with the hope of passing the child off as her own, according to charges filed Monday in a rare case of so-called fetal abduction

Rodriguez, 33, of Milwaukee, is charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of Maritza Ramirez, and her unborn son. According to the criminal complaint, Rodriguez went looking for a pregnant woman near a social service agency, found Ramirez and offered her a ride. They got some medicine for Ramirez, then stopped at Rodriguez's house to use the bathroom.

When Ramirez came out of the bathroom, Rodriguez struck her multiple times with a baseball bat, then strangled her unconscious before using an Exacto knife to cut her child from her womb, trying, she told detectives, to duplicate a Caesarean section she'd seen performed on the Discovery Channel.

Ramirez, 23, also of Milwaukee, had been scheduled to deliver her son Monday, but disappeared Thursday after telling her husband she was going on an errand. That was the day she was killed and the child cut from her womb at Rodriguez's home in the 1600 block of S. 7th St., according to the criminal complaint.

Around noon that day, Rodriguez had called 911 to say she had just given birth, but the baby wasn't breathing. Rescue personnel responded to the house in 1600 block of S. 7th St., but the newborn was dead. Rodriguez was taken to a hospital, and an autopsy was done on the baby, and on Friday police returned to Rodriguez's house and found Ramirez dead in the basement.
