WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal drug agents won't pursue pot-smoking patients or their sanctioned suppliers in states that allow medical marijuana, under new legal guidelines to be issued Monday by the Obama administration.
Two Justice Department officials described the new policy to The Associated Press, saying prosecutors will be told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state law.
The guidelines to be issued by the department do, however, make it clear that agents will go after people whose marijuana distribution goes beyond what is permitted under state law or use medical marijuana as a cover for other crimes, the officials said.
The new policy is a significant departure from the Bush administration, which insisted it would continue to enforce federal anti-pot laws regardless of state codes.
Fourteen states allow some use of marijuana for medical purposes: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

DENVER ââ¬â The Colorado ski town of Breckenridge has voted overwhelmingly to legalize marijuana.
Early returns Tuesday night showed the proposal winning with 72 percent of the vote. The measure would allow adults over 21 to have up to 1 ounce of marijuana.
The measure is largely symbolic because pot possession remains a state crime for people without medical clearance. But supporters said they wanted to send a message to local law enforcement to stop busting small-time pot smokers.
The vote comes as communities nationwide are struggling with how to enforce pot laws at a time when medical marijuana has surged in popularity.

Sarpy County Lt. Steve Grabowski tells 1110 KFAB they found more than 90 videos on YouTube showing David Johnson and his 17 and 19 year old sons smoking pot. Investigators also seized 50 bongs and pipes from Johnson's house during the January 12th search.
Johnson has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse and possesion of drug paraphernalia and marijuana. Johnson's oldest son Tavis was cited for marijuana possesion, and the 17 year old is now in foster care.
The Internet has become a tool for law enforcement officials in recent years and Grabowski says anyone who engages in illegal online activity
can end up in jail.

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- A truckload of confiscated marijuana that could be worth more than $1 million disappeared somewhere between Memphis and Louisville, Ky., sources say.
The more than 1,700 pounds of pot went missing during a controlled drug delivery going from Memphis to Louisville, The Memphis Commercial-Appeal reported Sunday.
A Memphis Police Department memo obtained by the newspaper said the drugs -- confiscated from a semi Feb. 10 -- were escorted to Louisville by Memphis police and Shelby County sheriff's deputies.
Sources said the officers saw several vehicles pull up to the tractor-trailer parked in Louisville, leave, come back, then leave again.
When they checked the contents of the truck it was empty, the sources said.
A federal agent in Memphis confirmed an investigation was being conducted, but said he could not reveal any other information, the newspaper said.

A person wearing scuba gear apparently tried to sneak two bundles of marijuana across the Mexican border through a sewer system on Friday, Border Patrol officials said.
Border Patrol agents operating infrared cameras noticed several individuals illegally crossing into the United States near a sewer outlet.
The Douglas Station's bike patrol went to the sewer system and saw one person carrying two bundles that were suspected to be marijuana.
That person was wearing a wet suit and scuba gear and was wading through waist-high water with the bundles, officials said.
The person saw the agents, dropped the bundles and began wading back toward Mexico. Apparently the other people spotted by the Border Patrol also fled, officials said.
The marijuana weighed 55 pounds and was estimated to be worth $44,000.

I'm surprised, I would think that a Mexican in scuba gear would be pretty good camoflauge.
