Quote:Ninety girls at Frayser High School in Memphis are pregnant or have recently given birth, according to Fox affiliate, WREG 3 of Memphis, Tennessee.
This shocking statistic isnââ¬â¢t uncommon for the Memphis area, says local Alicia Williamson.
ââ¬ÅThere were a whole lot of bellies. You had to watch out so you didnââ¬â¢t bump into them,ââ¬Â said Williamson, who graduated from Frayser in 2004. ââ¬ÅBeing 2011, I thought a lot of them would have thought this is not the right way to go, having babies during school time.ââ¬Â
Deborah Hester Harrison, who heads the teen pregnancy prevention organization Girls Inc., says Memphisââ¬â¢ teen pregnancy rate stands at between 15 and 20 percent, almost twice the national average.
Tennessee law requires schools to teach ââ¬ÅFamily Life Education.ââ¬Â In Memphis City Schools, this curriculum is taught to students in the ninth grade for several weeks each year. According to the Department of Education, Family Life Education puts an ââ¬Åemphasis on abstinence from sexual relations outside of marriage.ââ¬Â
A sign that abstinence-only education isnââ¬â¢t working? Nah.
Itââ¬â¢s not that simple, says Memphis City Schools board member Stephanie Gatewood. Thereââ¬â¢s a lot that goes into sex education. Itââ¬â¢s not like you just throw some soft porn onto a screen in the gym and hope the kids figure it out for themselves.
ââ¬ÅIf we do teach sex ed, we need to do it a whole lot sooner than 14, 15, 16,ââ¬Â Gatewood said. ââ¬ÅSo the question then becomes, when do you do it?ââ¬Â
Maybe sooner than 14, 15, 16? Just a thought.
If 1 of every 5 girls attending your schools will become pregnant at some point in their time there, you might want to try mixing things up. Experiment a little. If you donââ¬â¢t, the kids certainly will.
