Favre's agent speaks out on QB's status: 'He's retired, period'

Turns out you're not the only one growing tired of rumors of another Brett Favre comeback.

Bus Cook, Favre's longtime agent, was perplexed enough by recent reports tying the 41-year-old to several NFL teams that he reached out to a Mississippi newspaper Monday to "clear the air."

"Brett Favre retired in January," Cook told The Clarion-Ledger. "He has not talked to any teams, including Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles, the Arizona Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks. He has not talked to anyone about playing football. He's retired, period."

Cook previously had dismissed rumors of a comeback as "speculation."

Favre has insisted he's done playing football, but after several years of flirting with retirement, talk has spread that he could return. On Saturday, Philadelphia radio station WIP-AM reported that the Eagles were interested in signing Favre as a backup to starter Michael Vick, assuming current backup Kevin Kolb would be traded. Vick later tweeted that he would be honored to have Favre as his backup, then took down the post.

Favre spent most of his offseason at home in Hattiesburg, Miss., and has said he hasn't made a decision on his future. He suffered through an injury-plagued season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2010, throwing for 2,509 yards and 11 touchdowns with 19 interceptions.

One of Favre's old Green Bay Packers teammates -- former Pro Bowl wide receiver Sterling Sharpe -- didn't rule out a Favre return in an interview on NFL Network, saying it's "definitely possible" the quarterback could be open to signing with the Eagles.

The guy on the Philly sports radio said something like "it's a possibility" and then it snowballed from there.

One day after Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano refused to rule him out as the team's future quarterback, Brett Favre ended that speculation Friday, saying he has no designs on returning to football. "I haven't heard anything, and I don't have any interest," Favre told The Miami Herald outside his home in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Favre, 41, was approached after taking a photo with the Oak Grove High School football team, the same squad he's thrown passes to in recent summers.

The newspaper described the veteran of 20 seasons as moving "slowly and gingerly" and not looking the part of a man about to return for another NFL campaign.

"You're from Miami?" Favre asked The Herald reporter. "Don't you have anything better to do?

There’s a Brett Favre imposter in Green Bay. This guy, who does look a lot like the former Packers’ quarterback, attended training camp on Thursday in an old Favre replica jersey. People have reportedly been getting pictures and autographs from Fake Favre, but this being middle America we’re talking about, there’s no way to tell if these people are in on the joke.

“The guy is a phony!” Watson said. “But he keeps his head down so you can’t get that good of a look at him.”

Damn fake Brett Favre. Haven’t these people suffered enough?

Favre only surprised Rodgers didn't win Super Bowl sooner

Brett Favre acquired but one Super Bowl title during his otherwise iconic run with the Green Bay Packers, but he remains intrigued that his successor, Aaron Rodgers, took so long to do the same.

Emerging from the Mississippi wilderness this week for a rare interview with WQXI-AM (via SportsRadioInterviews.com), Favre riffed on Rodgers' career thus far, saying: "I'm going to be honest, I was not surprised (he won a title). The biggest surprise to me would be that he didn't do it sooner.

"I'd like to think that he watched, he learned, and then when he got a chance to play, he brought in his ability, which obviously is very good or they wouldn't have drafted him in the first round. He's got tremendous talent, he's very bright, and he got a chance to watch and he saw successful teams do it right. ... He just kind of fell into a good situation. On top of that, he's a good player. ... The talent around him is even better than when I was there. So I'm really kind of surprised it took him so long."

If it reads like a backhanded compliment, Favre's voice suggested no resentment or bitterness. It's just the Favre we've always known -- competitive, heart on his sleeve -- but one year removed from the game and content with his new life farming in his "tight little shorts, no shirt and his little red hat."

Favre, who turns 42 on Oct. 10, isn't about to stage another comeback. Guy's clearly over it. He bemoaned the monotonous grind between games and the "draining" week-to-week pressure to perform at peak level.

Still, there's this gem, floating in the ether.

"That's not to say one day I'll become bored. We all become bored with whatever we do, at some point," Favre said. "But I've got this philosophy right now to kind of just take everything as it comes, don't get hurried, there's no reason to -- and just enjoy life."
