I am sure this will start a shit storm: I just got back from Dunkin' Donuts and they alway have a tip cup on the counter. They are the only fast food chain I know of that allows their employees to solicit tips. You would never see that at McDonalds or Burger King. I have never tipped for my burger I wont tip for my coffee, unless I am sitting down and it is being brought to me.
Bartenders, waitresses and delivery people I tip very generously especially for good service. Haven been a bartender I know what it is like to be making $2.25 an hour and having someone stiff you on service. This isn't the case at Dunkins Donut they dont survive on their tips.
The other pet peeve I have is tipping the Mailman. These people have part time jobs that pay a real good full time pay. Full benefits and vacation package. With a nice pension (that we pay) at the end of 20 years service. Most of them retire before 50. Why the fuck should I tip them at Christmas?
If I am wrong tell me and I will start tipping everyone. But right now I just dont get it.

I agree with you 100%. I consider myself a very good tipper. In restaurants, I typically start at 20% and go up from there for the very reasons that you mentioned. When I'm getting a haircut, I tip the girl about 20-25%. Guy comes to my house to fix something, I toss him a ten spot if he isn't a dick.
But, I detest tip jars on counters in Wendy's, DD's, and other such establishments. I always have to resist the urge to knock them on the floor. Particularly Wendy's, who can NEVER get my order right.
The people that work in these places make minimum wage, at the very least. Unlike servers in restaurants, or bartenders, they are not making 2.25 an hour. Having a tip jar is a disgrace and should be banned everywhere.

I forgot about the barber! The barber always gets a great tip. As do cab drivers especilly if they turn off the meter early. If someone is working on the house they agreed to a price so I don't tip.
That being said, I just had an irrigation system put in. Those guys got lunch everyday. Everything from Italian sausages cooked over mesquite to homemade pulled chicken. There was a cooler full of iced down sodas and waters refreshed everyday. At the end of the day, cold beers for everyone.

Being in the military for many years, I moved frequently. Although the movers were on government contracts, we always ensured that they were well fed, and we always had cold drinks on hand for them, and we always tipped them handsomely, on both ends of the move. I believe they were always appreciative.

I'm talking more about the guy who comes out to take care of the gas leak and does a little extra to make the dryer more efficient, or the guy who comes out to fix the heater, and tweaks the water boiler so it runs better for you. Stuff like that.

I totally agree with you.
I was going to make a joke about "just the tip" but my brain has gone AWOL.

can you define "plow guy" for those without snow
fuck tipping the dunkin donuts people....
guys at the local sammich shop, yeah, they'll get it. i see them weekly and they don't fuck up my food (why i see them weekly to begin with)
my parent use to tip the garbage and mail men at christmas... but we're italian and that seemed normal.
i tip my wait staffer upon performance. one night we were at bertuccis and the girl did an awesome job. across from us was another table of hers, a bunch of teenagers. i overheard them arguing about the bill with one another, you know the "but i only had half a mozzarella stick" and knew that she'd be stiffed. i threw her a little extra for her grief.
she came and took the check before we left. she must have seen what i left her because she came back and said thank you 10 times. i felt good about that...
some people are just shitty tippers. i call those people assholes. then again, some people don't have it to give either....

It comes back to you. We Were at a Mexican resturant in Keene NH the day of my daughters graduation. We were are party of 5 and friends of my daughter ended up showing up making us a party of 10 - 12. I figured I was going to get hit with about a $400 - $500 drinks and all.
It was only $250 so I threw the waitress a standard 20% - $50.00. She ended up bumping into my dauger later that night at a club and thanked her again and said that tip save her shift becasue it was so slow that day.

Damn.. you beat me to it. I was going to ask him to define his "plow guy", and I do have snow.
It is always nice when you leave a nice tip and the server recognizes it.
