A German man with a broken heart told a court this week he was only trying to hill himself because his girlfriend dumped him when he caused a gas explosion that blew up half an apartment building and killed his neighbor, Reuters reported.

The 22-year-old jilted lover, who is charged with murder in Moenchengladbach, western Germany, opened the gas taps in his apartment in a suicide attempt. When his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend arrived to pick up her things she lit a cigarette, igniting the gas.

Fifteen people were injured in the blast and a 45-year-old neighbor was killed. Both the man on trial and his ex survived the accident. A court spokesman said the suicidal man did not realize there was a risk of an explosion, Reuters reported.
