JEFFERSON, N.C. — Prosecutors say a man shot by his best friend 45 times lived through the first 32 shots.

They highlighted the findings of pathologists at Freddie McDowell Jr.'s murder trial Thursday after defense testimony claimed the 24-year-old man suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, The Winston-Salem Journal reported.

Authorities say McDowell killed 19-year-old Drew Howell at a mountain home in Wilkes County, N.C., in June 2006.

McDowell's attorney says he acted in self-defense and was abused as a child.

But prosecutors showed photos of Howell, who was shot in the eyes, groin and chest with a .38-caliber revolver, and pointed out that McDowell cleaned the cabin before police arrived.

Prosecutors are expected to give their closing arguments Friday.
Will it blend? That is the question.

OMAHA, Neb. — A 5-year-old boy has been dropped off at an Omaha, Neb., hospital only a day before the state Legislature begins a meeting to change the state's safe-haven law.

The state Department of Health and Human Services said Friday the boy was left at Immanuel Medical Center about 9 p.m. Thursday. He's from Sarpy County near Omaha.

Nebraska's safe-haven law was intended to protect unwanted newborns from being abandoned, but unlike similar laws in other states, Nebraska's doesn't include an age limit.

The Legislature opens a rare special session Friday afternoon to change the law and add an age limit.

As of Friday, 34 children have been abandoned under the law. Five have been from out of state.

A schoolboy collapsed and went into convulsions after playing a new version of the "World of Warcraft" online computer game for 24 hours straight.

The 15-year-old boy and his friends were exploring the "Wrath of the Lich King" expansion pack when he suffered what appeared to be an epileptic seizure, it was reported Monday.

"They played all day and all night. Maybe they got a few hours of sleep. They ate a little food and breakfast at their computers," the boy's father told the Kvällsposten newspaper in Sweden.

Doctors told the father that his son's bodily systems had been disrupted by a combination of sleep deprivation, lack of food and the prolonged period of concentration playing the game.

The teenager and six friends were reported to have gathered at his home in Laholm, western Sweden, on Saturday to play the updated version of the game, which went on sale Thursday. He collapsed at around 2 p.m. Sunday.

The boy is expected to make a full recovery but his father said he plans on limiting the amount of time his son is allowed to play computer games.

Wikipedia: Video Game Addiction excerpts:

A Harris Interactive poll released in April 2007 found that 8.5% of "youth gamers" in the United States could be "classified as pathologically or clinically 'addicted' to playing video games."

A British survey reported in November 2006 indicated 12% of polled gamers exhibit addictive behaviours.

Video game overuse is believed to be more of a problem in Asia. A governmental survey in South Korea estimated that 2.4% of South Koreans aged 9 to 39 are addicts, with 10.2 percent more "borderline cases."

China: In Jinzhou, China, Xu Yan died after playing online games continuously for over 15 days during the Lunar New Year holiday. An unnamed 30 year-old male died in Guangzhou, China after playing continuously for 3 days.

South Korea: Lee Seung Seop was an industrial boiler repairman in Daegu, South Korea. On August 3, 2005, he visited a nearby Internet cafe and proceeded to play StarCraft for almost fifty consecutive hours. He went into cardiac arrest from both exhaustion and dehydration-induced heart failure. He died shortly thereafter at a local hospital. About six weeks before his death, his girlfriend, also an avid gamer, broke up with him, and he had been fired from his job for missing work to play computer games
