Quote:NEW YORK (AP)—Mark McGwire finally came clean, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball’s home run record in 1998.

McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade. During a 20-minute telephone interview shortly afterward, his voice repeatedly cracked.

“It’s very emotional, it’s telling family members, friends and coaches, you know, it’s former teammates to try to get a hold of, you know, that I’m coming clean and being honest,” he said. “It’s the first time they’ve ever heard me, you know, talk about this. I hid it from everybody.”

whats the statute of limitations on lying to a senate inquiry panel ? he's only coming clean because he doesn't want to get a bunch of shit @ spring training although this makes it more likely to happen.

He didn't lie to a Senate Inquiry Panel. He said he wasn't there to discuss the past.

Interestingly, he was going to actually testify that day. We just learned today that the only reason he didn't was because the committee refused to grant him immunity, which he was expecting them to do. So, no immunity, no testimony. Therefor, he decided that he wasn't there to discuss the past.

It was Rafael Palmiero who flat out lied to the committee, wagging his finger at them and everything.

And I completely agree that the only reason MacGuire said anything was to help ease his transition back into spring training. But, this is only going to create more of a media circus, not less of one.
