Still no first rounders
#1
The Cleveland Browns gather their rookies for training camp two weeks from today. Three days later, the entire Cowboys roster convenes.

And the league points out at its labor-focused website that nearly half of all draft picks have signed.

Still, not a single first-round pick has agreed to terms, and only one second-rounder is under contract.

The pattern fits the theory that teams cleared the decks on all picks after round two, and that they then plan to dig in as to the players taken at the top of the draft.

Time will tell whether teams move more slowly than in past years. For now, the point is that the rate at which players have been signed from rounds three through seven has no relevance to the speed with which players sign, or don't sign, in rounds one or two.

The NFL season can never get here fast enough and the last two seasons have started as late as they're allowed. This season starts only a day earlier than last. If the labor issues don't interfere they'll start to sign just before training camp, which as you say is still weeks away. It's still surprising Bradford hasn't signed.

Receiver Dez Bryant has done everything right on the field during the first two days of Dallas Cowboys training camp, but he refuses to participate in an NFL rite of passage. According to the rookie first-round pick, Roy Williams and the other veteran receivers can carry their own shoulder pads after practice.

Williams gave his pads to Bryant after Sunday's morning practice, but Bryant declined to carry them. Williams threatened to go to "step two" when talking to reporters.

"Barring the unforeseen," NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora expects No. 6 overall pick Russell Okung to sign by the end of this weekend.

With C.J. Spiller signing Friday morning, Okung is the last remaining unsigned first-rounder. His agent and the Seahawks negotiated through the night and are still at it Friday morning. It seems that there are still some minor sticking points to iron out, but they've made steady progress this week. Okung will be inserted at left tackle almost immediately upon signing.

Every first-round draft pick in the NFL has now come to an agreement on a contract.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Seahawks and No. 6 overall pick Russell Okung have agreed to terms on a six-year deal.

Mort reports that the contract pays Okung, a left tackle from Oklahoma State, $30 million in guaranteed money. The contract has a maximum value of $58 million.

Although first-round picks around the league were slow to get started signing, the league is free of any lengthy first-round holdouts this season, with everyone signed more than a month before the season starts
