Hey Everyone!
Not too long ago I was able to straight-trade a Schecter I had for a Jackson 7-string. I already have an Agile 7 with a Nazgul/Sentient Combo, so I wanted to try something altogether different. Something less metal and more PAF style. I wasn't quite digging the other S.D. options and DiMarzio doesn't have many PAF options for 7-string at all. In fact, as you'd expect, 7-string pickups are still not that easy to find when compared to the variety of 6-strings. So what to do? Well, I decided to look into Zhangbucker, and I gave him a call. We chatted, and just yesterday afternoon, my pickups arrived. I haven't hooked them up yet, so updates on this thread will hopefully be done by Sunday. Depending of course on my Honey-Do list content. But below are a Zhanbucker Woodbucker 24 (neck) and a Super O-Bucker (bridge). The later is based off of a sale pickup I bought from Zhang, that was wound to 12.8k with an A4 mag. And yes, same specs here! So without further ado, I present to you, dear forumites, the first 7-string Zhangbuckers ever! Lucky me!
This one's without the flash. A little blurry, but better represents the cream color of the reverse zebra bobbins.

David does exceptional work.
I spent a couple of hours today with a set of his 'buckers wailing through my Celtic Franklin.
Because I said so.

I put up a quick post on SDUGF thread, but I need to spend more time as I haven't been giving myself much time to play in the last few days. Spent more time maintaining guitars than playing. Overall, they are pretty bad-ass. They are what I was looking for in that they are dynamic, jangly, vintage-style in flavor, and have a clean, clear low-B. Kinda-bass like. Here's what I wrote at SDUGF:
Quote:Alrighty. I have been busy with other stuff so my play time on these has only been about a total of 30 minutes. That said, the results have been quite pleasant thus far. The bridge has a great PAF, vintage-like jangle and clarity that is quite nice on cleans and aggressive when pushed with gain. I'm able to get some nice tones with moderate gain, and some nice tones with gobs of gain too. Not as aggressive sounding as a high-output pickup like a Duncan Distortion, but more full sounding and dynamic which adds a lot of tonal color. Think about how the 59/Custom Hybrid sounds when compared to the Duncan Custom. The neck has a good warmth to it and is smooth, but not muddy like some A2-based neck HBs can be. Clarity is excellent. Both pickups have great articulation. The Low-B sounds almost bass-like in tone giving it a chimey-clear type of sound that is both unique (IMHO anyway) and quite pleasing.
I'll get some more play-time in tonight and see if I can give some more info. Also of note, while these pickups aren't high-output by specs, they are giving me some overdrive on clean, so I need to lower them a bit to kinda lighten-it-up on my clean channel.

Alrighty! I'm going to add some notes to my previous review (sorry for my tardiness). If I didn't mention it before, they are installed In a Jackson JS32-7Q Dinky. It's a basswood body w/quilt maple veneer, 3 piece bolt-on maple neck, rosewood fretboard. and a fixed bridge. The guitar has always had a slight twanginess and nasal character. It was their with the stock pickups and on these a bit too.
The bridge pickup has a wonderful three-dimensional quality. Very full sounding. The A4 gives it a vintage tone and chimey character. The EQ is flatter than an A5 or A2. It doesn't sound flat as that has a negative, dead connotation. I would say it sounds even. Which is nice because unlike some pickups the individual strings never sound louder than any other. Makes the response very balanced. It also allows the low B to have good volume, bass-like tone, and wonderful clarity. No mud or woffiness. Really sounds good clean and also sounds nice when distorted. It sounds more classic-rock tone than most 7-string pickups which is refreshing. The uneven coils give it a little more treble and single-coil like tone without being thin or overly-trebley. Great liveliness to it. As a final thought, you can hit pinch-harmonics easily, but the pickup does not create ones on accident. You get what you want, when you want.
The neck is a very unique pickup. It has more clarity and chime than any other A2-based neck humbucker I have ever heard! It's still smooth and warm but the highs, while rounded, never sound like they are being cut-off like some A2 pickups sound. It's not as flutey as I would like, but I think has more to do with the fact that it's in a 24-fret guitar that lends itself to being less sweet sounding in the neck. In short, not the fault of the pickup. When used together (as mentioned with the character of this guitar) it's a little nasal on the G-B-E strings. But again, very clear and chimey while still remaining warm.
If you guys are looking for a set of pickups that are like vintage-style with a little pepper and great clarity, while warm, call Zhangbucker. You won't be disappointed.

Sounds rad, Dave! I'm glad you like them. I had Zhang wind the pickups for my D'avanzo and though I've not played it plugged in at volume since October, I was not in any way disappointed with his work.
