New pedalboard preview
#11
Thanks Will. It may be the most noticeable part of the board, but in my opinion the coolest is the part I'm going to start working on next. It's one of those things that's meant not to be noticed because it makes everything else look better. I'm going to start testing tomorrow and hopefully I can have it done by the end of the week. I'll explain exactly what it is later.

I wish I had the space, tools and skills to make a sweet pedalboard like this. Nice work so far man.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. But believe me, I barely have the skills to do this. I'm learning so much as I go along, and I'm making plenty of mistakes on the way. I'm glad I got a gigantic piece of ply (enough to do four of the same boards) as it leaves some much needed room for error.

I figured I'd take the time now to explain what my next move is going to be. Since I'm using a looper/midi controller, each pedal has to have a cable going to and coming from the unit. That makes for a lot of cabling, which would both look rather messy and distract from whatever color/design I put on the board.

So I came up with a little idea to hide the cabling. I'm going to make a riser for each pedal out of ply that will be just slightly smaller (say one tenth of an inch on each side) than the pedal it's under. Under the center of the riser, I will drill a hole, and then I will route channels into the riser so I can put the 1/4" and power cables under the riser, so they'll be as invisible as possible. I'll also be routing a channel right in front of my power supplies so I can put the cables under the board, as well as one in front of the controller so I can get the cables to it. I think I'll make a small angled riser for the controller, just so there's a little more room for the jacks on the bottom to get in there, and also to make it a little easier to use.

Routed a channel in the main board.

It's not perfect, but it's better than the practice runs I did. Anyway, this will allow the power cables to go from the power supplies to the pedals through the bottom of the board, like so:

I got most of the risers done tonight. I still have to make one for the controller, and I need to figure out what I'm going to do about the wah.

It seems to work as intended.

My router work shows my skill with the tool, but that's fine because this side will be glued to the board anyway.

I still need to route a cable access slot in the main board for my controller. I also need to route cabling channels into the top of the riser for my tuner and univibe. Once that's done, I need to do a few more small things but then I can start assembling the riser and drilling holes in the board under where each pedal will go so I can pull the cables up through the bottom.

The last pedalboard I made for myself was literally a board with two strips of velcro attached.

Nice work so far. I want to see it fully populated!
Someone should put that in their signature…

Moar progress

I found a shop vac at a garage sale for $5, so now I can route while my brother is blowing glass without getting sawdust in his vagina. So I was able to get a bunch of work done.

I got most of the cable routing done for the top of the riser. I still need to route a hole for the midi cables to come up through but then the riser is done and I can finally put it together.

I also routed channels in the main board for cable access to the switcher. No pictures of that at the moment, but I will say that this is such a learning experience. I wish I had routed the large hole needed to get the power cable through the board UNDER where the switcher will go, just like I did with the strymons (I did the riser last). Oh well, live and learn.

I am getting pretty close to the finish line here. I just need to fish the routing on the riser, assemble the riser, and then I can start drilling holes in the board where each pedal will go. I still need to figure out how I want to affix my wah and how to give it cable access, but I've got a pretty good idea of how to do that.

After I drill holes for cabling for all the pedals, it's time to paint. I can't wait to get this thing finished up.

Use a guide next time, for the router base to ride alongside. Could be as simple as a piece of scrap wood that has a straight side.

That's what I've been doing for all routing work that will be visible. Not sure why I didn't do it here.

Fuckin' glass blowers and their vaginas. Don't get me wrong, I'll take their pipes but shit man, they can be some anal motherfuckers. I know a guy who has been blowin' it for the past 10 years now, I know their corner.
