The saga continues.

A couple of weeks ago our work network got hit with a worm. The techs are STILL trying to get rid of it. About a week into this debacle my laptop got infected. Now I’m on a loaner.

But wait, there’s more!

My home computer appears to be infected. First I lost audio. I restarted. I ran scans.

Now windows security keeps disabling. No audio. No internet. Most of the typical startup processes can’t be found.

The worst thing is I just bought and downloaded Presonus Studio One and 30 plug-ins.

Avast finds nothing. Super Antispyware only found 2 cookies. I can get windows restore to open.

I’m at a loss. Any suggestions?

I’ve been fighting this all evening. Processes are turned off. I turn them back on, but the restore function still does not work.

I get error messages such as:

“A volume shadow copy service component encounter d an unexpected error.” It suggests checking the event log, but I can’t get there. On the rare occasion that it opens, I have no clue what I am looking at.

For creating a recovery drive:

“We can’t create the recovery drive. A problem occurred while creating the recovery drive.”

I can’t get online. I can restore. Audio will not work. I suspect this is related to a recent windows update.

I did manage to copy important files to an external drive.

Go and get these. Instead of trying to down load it on to the problem computer, maybe get them via some other computer, put them on a memory stick and then onto the problem computer and run them. Disconnect from the net/network before you install/run them

Run the adware cleaner first. If it finds problems , let it do its thing [fix and reboot ] and then try the root kit beta.

Here's something else to do.
Open up your file manager [ windows explorer -NOT Internit exploder ] and
type this into the address bar %temp% and press enter. This will take you to the temp directory and all the junk in it.
Mark it all [ select all ] and then delete it all [ right click/delete ]. There may be a few files that won't. Skip them.
Then empty the recycle bin.

I’ll try that later.

I ran CCleaner, which should have deleted all the temp files.

neither tool found anything.

I chatted with the monkeys at MS. It was recommended that I run a "MediaCreationTool" and do a clean install of windows.

I got the tool. I ran it from an External HDD. It encountered an error code: 0x800706D9-0x20000

I researched the error. It's a Windows Firewall issue. I attempted to restart the Firewall. I got error code: 87.

I don't want to spend the money, but I think I'm going to have to invest in a replacement.
