EJ had a great looking Charvel with a Floyd in the 80s. Its really not that much of a stretch.
Its more in the amp than the pickups. That being said, I have my kinks about pickups.

EMGs for the most part are very limited in the number of good sounds they will make. The set on my 80s Stienberger each made a fantastic clean and dirty.

I dunno - they were all the rage in the '80s. Even back then the product line had a lot of choices.
I finally got an 81 in 88 or so and promptly butchered that Jackson I have. Wish I hadn't done that. If you knew who the right guys who did some fancy wiring, you certainly can do a lot with them, even mix them with passives. Knopfler's Pensa/Suhr for example. SA/SA/85, SPC modified to a simple switch and a resistor/cap to get the #2 quack sound. The Gilmour set sounded great on the Floyd albums, but in my personal experience, a bit meh.
