Among the things I’ve asked Santa for, there is a tin Rahr and Sons sign that I’ve had my eye on, but alas, my wife will not let me spend money on making her space look like a bar. The only good thing that this restriction has created is offering more money to spend on the wonderful beers this company produces. While I have not always been so kind to some of their normal production line, this company produces some of the most exceptional one offs and seasonal brews this drinker has experienced. Suds With Securb: Time For Bud Light to Man Up
3rd party testing lab Consumer Reports recently did a blinded controlled testing of ten popular lagers. The only standout of the ten was Coors which scored “very good” for taste and value. Coors also delivered a solid whooping to InBev rivals Budweiser and Bud Light in both taste and value categories.
The big surprise here is Budweiser and Bud Light from Anheuser-Busch InBev NV (BUD) (NYSE) didn’t even place in the value category. Adding insult to injury is AB was beaten out by Trader Joe’s store brand Tag contract brewed by Minhas Craft Brewery and Walgreen’s store brand Big Flats brewed by Genesee Brewing Company. Walgreens? Come on man! Read the rest of this entry »
Sud Savant: Avery Salvation – Look. It’s Glowing!
Ok, so technically this isn’t a winter seasonal or Christmas beer, but with a name like “Salvation” this beer may be lie nearer to the heart of the Christmas season than any other. Avery’s religion-themed beers have earned a great deal of respect from me for their hop accentuated, malt-balanced beers, so I am more than willing to pry off the top on another one and see how it drinks. Let’s pour! Read the rest of this entry »
Pope Crisco: Winter Warmer by Rahr and Sons Brewing Co
Howdy folks, I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season thus far. Christmas day is a week away, presents have been bought and wrapped, and now it’s time for the part of the holidays that I enjoy the most: inebriation.
To begin the much needed greasing of the holiday spirit, I made a trip to Central Market, a kind of epicurean grocery market that offers some of the best variety of craft beers in the Texas market. There I picked out a few tasty beverages, including a six-pack of Rahr and Sons’ Winter Warmer, and a bomber of the same brew that has been aged in bourbon barrels. Read the rest of this entry »

Sud Savant: Samuel Adams Infinium (2011) – They Said It Couldn’t Be Done
They said it couldn’t be done. They said I’d never make it. The odds were not in my favor. Well, I’m here to tell you that I did it. I turned 30 today. I lived just long enough to make my parents feel really old and to sprout a few silver additions to my hairline (which is wonderfully intact, thankyouverymuch). Days like today call for celebration, which is why I’ll be breaking out a beer meant for celebration: Samuel Adams’ collaboration with Weihenstephan called Infinium. Quite a namesake to live up to and I hope it does. Let’s pour! Read the rest of this entry »
Pope Crisco: Full Moon Rye Pale Ale by Real Ale Brewing Company
Life is good knowing that I will have a job soon, and with another project making steady progress, I am not wanting for purpose and focus. For the most part, I have decided to take this weekend easier than most, as I do not have the burdens of no employment or tile to move for a sibling, but instead a fridge full of beer that needs to be logged.
To begin this weekend’s leisure, with a stomach full of carnitas and al pastor street tacos, it’s time for a post lunch, pre-siesta cerveza. And what, pray tell, is on the beer menu today? It’s Real Ale Brewing Company’s Full Moon Rye Pale Ale. Read the rest of this entry »
Sud Savant: New Belgium – Kick
I finally have the opportunity to break out some pumpkin beers! Sure, I had a few during the season, but my health really didn’t let me review any the way I would have liked. It’s time to make up for lost time. Today’s review is from New Belgium and their “Lips of Faith” series; something I have heard much about, but had little opportunity to try. I have mixed feelings going into this bottle because of the following description: Read the rest of this entry »
Pope Crisco: Christmas Ale from St Arnold Brewing Co.
Well guys, with just 10 days left in the holiday season, I find myself with most of my Christmas presents purchased, several reviews still pending editing before uploading (my editor is a college professor, and is too busy correcting her students grammatical errors to address those of her husband), and a few beers to chill, consume, and review.
For the second winter/Christmas beer of the season for Intoxico to review, I have the Christmas Ale from Houston’s St Arnold Brewing Co. Read the rest of this entry »

Pope Crisco: St Arnold Brewing Co Elissa IPA
Well, another day is in the can, and another beer is needed to wash away the fatigue of a day spent in toil.
As my mother prepares one of my favorite meals, chicken fried steak, I have decided to pop the cap of another Texas brewed beer, Elissa IPA from our friends at the Saint Arnold Brewery, located in the parking lot known as Houston, TX. Read the rest of this entry »
Jim Beam Bold Choices: Let’s All Blaze a Trail in 2012
Those of you that follow this site know that we have been working with Jim Beam for the past few months. I want to personally thank Jim Beam for including us in their Bold Choices promotion. I have found myself making more Bold Choices lately and these choices are bringing me to some wonderful places.
The original Bold Choice Jim Beam helped me make was in regards to my guitar playing. I have been a Boston bread hard rocking guitar player all my life. Since visiting Nashville last year I have been in awe of my southern guitar playing counterparts. I have been truly inspired but their playing. Read the rest of this entry »

New Belgium Brewing’s “Glass That Gives” program is underway and the sound of blissful clinking can be heard around the country. So far, more than 12,100 glasses have been shipped to beer lovers through online purchases and on-premise promotions, and more than $7,000 has been raised for four nonprofit organizations. The campaign runs through January 31, but time is running out for delivery before Christmas. Read the rest of this entry »
Sud Savant: Dogfish Head – Robert Johnson’s Hellhound on My Ale
This beer is being broken out for two reasons:
1. Fellow beer enthusiast Jason from thegreatestbeerofalltime.com mocked me for holding on to this great “super-hoppy ale” and not drinking it at its peak freshness. I must make amends. :)
2. 2011 marked the 100th birthday of Delta bluesman Robert Johnson and coincidentally, this post marks my 100th POST!
Now, certainly one of those anniversaries is much more important than the other (I leave that for the reader to decide), but in either case, due to the rare nature of Dogfish Head beer in my locale, this beer has been waiting for a special occasion. I’m very excited to crack it open and very excited that people continue to read and share this blog. Craft beer people ARE good people! I’ve found trading partners, met people in real life, discovered new festivals, shared opinions, exchanged laughs, partaken in lengthy conversations, and even found a free beer or two along the way. I’m proud to be a small part of such a great, growing community. Big thanks to my drinkin’ buddy and beer trading partner extraordinairre Keith for snagging me this bottle from 1200 miles away. Let’s pour! Read the rest of this entry »
