This extraordinarily popular movie filmed on a relatively small budget shows that a strong script, good acting and a story that resonates can open the doors to all sorts of films that may never have had a chance …the “Night of the Living Dead” routine, which this film reminds me of on so many levels.  Where George A. Romero’s 1968 horror masterpiece was bleak and lacking in hope, this film splashes color and hopeful possibilities to explore, all shrouded by the darker side of human emotion.   It’s an enthralling trip which entertains, brings drama, and makes you think. Review: The Rolling Stones – Some Girls Live In Texas DVD

Posted by Joe Viglione On February - 11 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Better lit than 1972’s Ladies & Gentlemen The Rolling Stones, that DVD filmed over four nights in Texas during 1972’s “Exile on Main Street” tour, this “Some Girls Live” is from a Fort Worth, Texas from July 18, 1978. The two projects – with 6 years between them – provide a Texas-twosome of Stones performances that make for good analysis…as well as the general good old time we expect from Mick & the boys.

“All Down the Line” is a nice enough kick-off, a slowed-down “Honky Tonk Women” exquisite for the musicianship and nice mix in the headphones, though one wonders if Mick Jagger’s pantomimes will survive the centuries as future historians look back into these time capsules. Perhaps I spoke too soon here as the nasty and vindictive side of Mick has him beaming with malevolence on the very next track. Read the rest of this entry »

The studio’s first Best Picture Academy Award winner follows a group of idealistic young men as they join the German Army during World War I and are assigned to the Western Front, where their patriotism is destroyed by the harsh realities of combat. The hard-hitting, timeless masterpiece returns with stunning visual enhancement to its deserving place in film history. Read the rest of this entry »

How many critics are going to clue in on the misnomer in the title, the Rolling Stones owning the trademark “Greatest Rock Band in the World” by eminent domain, if not hard fact. Indeed, it is hard to argue with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and their longevity…staggering income, and timeless popularity as not the heirs to the throne, but those who had created it. Despite the “massive” popularity discussed in this documentary (listen to the “Flash Gordon” segment, and the quip against the critics), this critic remains steadfast that Queen is a great band for its specific niche, but the fans of Jimi Hendrix, Lennon & McCartney, Janis Joplin, The Doors and a variety of other major, major stars have a solid argument that, though Queen is a mighty force, it can hardly be considered the “greatest” rock & roll band in the world. To go down that avenue is to ignore the legacy of Freddie Mercury…it is a bit insulting to his memory, in my opinion… Read the rest of this entry »

“Today’s the day, everything changes, one way or another” sayeth actor Sam Worthington as disgraced cop Nick Cassidy in the trailer to Man on a Ledge…and it sounds very much like his Jake Sully character at the end of Avatar speaking his final words before becoming one with his mask. If the plot seems suspiciously like Samuel L. Jackson’s disgraced cop taking hostages in 1998′s The Negotiatior, you are correct…that’s almost exactly the story here. Both films are set up in a high rise, the perp chooses – actually demands – which person will “negotiate” before he makes good on his threat – in Samuel Jackson’s case – to kill hostages; in Sam Worthington’s case, to jump off the ledge, and both movies have that bank robbery drama that worked so well for Spike Lee’s Inside Man. Now that Ferris Bueller’s Day Off II has been teased it makes us wonder who besides Matthew Broderick will be returning to the cast. This ensemble cast of brat pack wannabes and B character actors have had a fairly nefarious 23 years since Ferris played sick.

Mia Sara who played Ferris’ love interest Sloane Peterson is still sporadically working. If there is a role in the flick for her I could not see her turning it down. Alan Ruck who played Ferris” best friend and later appeared as Stuart Bondek on Spin City, turns nothing down. I don’t think there is a TV drama Ruck hasn’t done a stint on. Where this gets dicey is will Jennifer Grey reprise her role as Ferris’ s sister Jeanne Bueller? Read the rest of this entry »
