One of the more mysterious MMOs, Funcom’s The Secret World was a Lovecraftian MMO set in modern times, with the world transformed by apocalyptic magic. The game was announced with an ARG (alternate reality game) and since then, there’s been little press about it. Well, now Electronic Arts has signed an agreement to publish The Secret World.
According to David DeMartini, senior vice president and general manager of EA Partners:
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Funcom, one of the world-leaders in the development of massively multiplayer online games. We are very excited to be able to take part in the growing online gaming category with such a highly anticipated title as The Secret World.”
Funcom, whose best known MMOs include Anarchy Online and Age of Conan, is equally pleased, as CEO Trond Arne Aas states:
“We are tremendously excited to be working with what is undoubtedly the world-leading games publisher for the past decade, and it is also a great testament to the fantastic work of our development team. The experience and the knowledge that Electronic Arts brings to the table will be instrumental in allowing us to realize the full potential of The Secret World.”
No release date has been announced, but it is probable that The Secret World will adopt a free-to-play model. Let us know what you think.
