Guitar Gear Review: Smokey Amplifiers

This is a cool little tool I’ve been using for about 15 years. Yep, a little amp. Why would you need a little amp that clocks in at about 2.5″ x 4″? For whatever you can think of. Personally, I just thought it was a cool idea.

I took it with me on a trip, as going 3-4 days without playing was unthinkable! lol! My pal had a spare 4×12 there, which made me remember you can go out of the Smokey and sure enough, it powered that cab. Yep, it will power a 4, 8 or 16 ohms.

More recently, it’s been a handy tool for the workbench to check my work without having to fire up the big amp. It’s small and easily keeps out of the way. The 9v battery power supply means there is no cable to get in the way of anything. And a 9v battery seems to be lasting me a very long time….in all these years, I think it might just be on it’s 2nd battery.

How does it sound? Come on, man, let’s face it….it’s not a JCM800. But….it’s very responsive to the volume control on the guitar and cleans up really well when backed off. At full volume, it’s louder than you’d expect for something this size. Put some pedals in front of it, if you’d like.

Warming up before a show…. saving space in a dorm room…. workbench tool…. whatever you can think of.
