Costa Del Mar has hit it out of the park again. Their new South Sea frames are stylish and original. The South Sea frames as you can see seem to be a modern, retro fusion. The thick frames are accented by a wire under the frame in a very retro fashion. However, the lens shape lends itself to a very modern style. We reviewed a pair in silver teak with gray lenses.
The biggest test of any sunglasses or frames we review is when we take them on the street. When wearing the South Sea frames, I was repeatedly asked what kind of sunglasses I was wearing and who the manufacturer was.
The quality of the South Sea is as expected from a manufacturer like Costa Del Mar. These frames are handmade, you can see the attention to detail. The fit is comfortable due to their spring hinged frames. The frames wrap your head comfortably giving a secure fit and confidence the glasses will not fly off your face. Providing added comfort is a feature I like best, the rubber lined supports on the bridge of the glasses.
I am eager to wear these glasses on the ski slopes in a couple of months. Most people think of sunglasses as a summer accessory. Those of us that have been blinded by the sun reflecting off the snow knows better. The 100% polarization the South Sea provides kills reflected glare and reduces eye strain. The lenses also have 100% UV light blockage for max protection.
Style wise the South Sea frames are the most flexible frames I have ever tried. The lend themselves to casual, sport or even formal attire. I would feel as comfortable wearing these on a mountain bike as I would in a business suit. As I said in the opening of this review, the South Sea are unique frames and sharp as hell. The South Seas come in a variety of lens choices and tortoise shell, silver teak or black frames.
