I actually saw Whitechapel at my first metal show. They were one of the least bad bands there that day.
It definitely took me a while to warm up to Gojira. At first I thought all the riffs sounded the same, kind of like Tool in a way. But the more I listened the more I loved them.

When I was in high school, I hated U2 with a passion. I couldn't get past the simple one-note song structures and over-reliance on fx. But when Achtung Baby! dropped, their music started making sense to me. Now even their old stuff is alright to my ear. If I had back all the $$$ I've spent on concert tickets for them, I could buy a really nice amp.
Someone should put that in their signature…
