On Thursday evening, October 13, 2011, Bela Lugosi biographer ARTHUR LENNIG will talk about his books THE COUNT (1974) and THE IMMORTAL COUNT (2003) on Visual Radio Live. Lennig’s book was the first in-depth look at the brilliant yet troubled life of Lugosi, the star of stage and screen who immortalized author Bram Stoker’s vampire, with lines like “I never drink…wine” and “I am…Dracula” The 1974 edition, entitled The Count “The life and films of Bela “Dracula” Lugosi”, contained 374 pages. Published by Putnam, the book quickly sold out of its initial run and was not re-released by that New York publisher, making it very valuable in collector’s circles.
On June 27, 2003, the University Press of Kentucky put out an amazing leather-bound hardcover edition with 174 additional pages and a new title: THE IMMORTAL COUNT: The life and films of Bela Lugosi. It expands upon the original work and pays great attention to detail. Among the dozen or so books on Lugosi many consider this the best read…and the most accurate.
Also on Visual Radio, author Frank Dello Stritto who is thanked in the Lennig book. Dello Stritto published his “Vampire Over London: Bela Lugosi in Britain” on Cult Movies Press in September of 2000. Like Lennig’s THE COUNT, this is a 1st edition book that is fast becoming a collectors item as well.
Dello Stritto, a weekly contributor to Visual Radio, will discuss a classic Lugosi film The Invisible Ghost with Joe Viglione and Kevin Russo on October 13, 2011, for rebroadcast on the Friday night show, immediately preceding WinCAM’s Friday Night at the movies.
