While at NAMM I asked a Gibson representative about the Richlite fret boards. I was shocked when I got what seemed like an honest answer. He referenced the whole Lacey Act fiasco from a few years ago. He said after that, getting ebony was becoming such a pain in the ass that they got fed up and said screw it. They changed to Richlite at that point because it had the properties they wanted and no hassle.
Not saying I agree, but at least I didn't get the "superiority of the new material" speech that I expected.
