Gibson 2014 SG Special Electric Guitar Fireburst Vintage Gloss Xmas present for my friend Chuck Norris from his wife. He is pretty happy with it like it is but I am going to supercharge it with some Planet Waves machines a Babicz bridge and some straplocks. They are putting Cleartone strings on their guitars now that is a plus and they are 10s it looks like. You can feel a line down the neck where the paint meets the fretboard all the way down it on both sides just lazy finishing , is a decent guitar and the 120th annv on the 12th fret looks nice actually thought I would hate that.

Nice!
I know you're not actually friends with THE Chuck Norris... but I'm going to pretend you are anyway.

Well he is Chuck Norris and why couldn't I be friends with the other one ? I tell you something else his job is something the real one wouldn't do for any amount of money he is a Captain of a scallop boat. You think crab boats on TV are tough them guys wouldn't do scallops for twice what they make in crabs. Nasty, awful deadly job will get you killed in the blink of an eye. Anyway after tweaking the action and the intonation a little it plays pretty well and is musically resonant unplugged. I can't get over the edgeline of the neck paint it just drives me crazy having it under my hand. Waiting on the pieces and parts to upgrade so I will give it a good beating at volume tomorrow. One other thing 24 frets on a 24 3/4 scale guitar is rather tight.

After adjusting the pups and plugging it in I have to say this guitar sounds good. 2 push/pulls for series/parallel( I think that is how it is wired) The grippy notched speed knobs are nice did not think I would like them of course.Don't really care for the off brown (creme wtf ?) mounting rings and toggle label. Graphtech nut isn't the Tusq XL but it is fine. You can see router marks on the top of the headstock which is just pure lazy and no attention to detail. Crank them out as fast as you can makes more profit of course. There is a long checklist and if 3 of the strings are out of intonation by a large margin how can you check that box on the QA list ? Really bothers me to pay (highly) for the Gibson name and not get an immaculate perfect guitar 100% of the time? All around it is a good guitar and when I get done with it the only thing it will ever need is some big fat SS frets in 10 years or so. 490 pups sound good have no issues with them at all , unlike the last SG that sounded horrible with them until a pro adjusted them properly. Most likely operator error , the previous owner thought he should be turning pole pieces because he was smart or something ?

And surprise ! It has a maple neck very cool. The paint was remarkably easy to remove from the neck took less then an hour to do the entire job up 800 grit and oiled. I think Gibson just makes guitars as fast and half assed as they can get away with nowadays. If you just coast on your past accomplishments you will find the road will eventually hit a very steep hill that you can't climb. Anyway

A maple neck instead of the advertised mahogany? <sigh>

They advertise the 2014 SG special as having a maple neck. Its confusing since all of tje previous incarnations were mahogany, but they do let you know I'm the specs.
