Restaurant Review: Ocean Club – Fairmont Southampton, Bermuda

On a recent vacation to Bermuda, while staying at the famed Fairmont Southampton Resort, my wife and I ate dinner at their newly redesigned Ocean Club restaurant. This is Southampton’s seafood fare.  They offer a very good number of choices, and everything is fresh.

The Ocean Club has recently undergone a makeover, from walls to menu.  The new menu focuses more on fresh fish and less on items such as Chicken Currie, a former main staple of the restaurant.

This well lit, colorfully and tastefully decorated restaurant sits at the bottom of the hill, a three-minute trolley ride away from the resort and right on the resort’s private beach.  While dining we sat ocean view and had a gorgeous view of the beach and ocean over the restaurant’s veranda which is used for outside diners.

My wife, Lynn, used this opportunity to try another shrimp cocktail.  She was not disappointed.  They were large and flavorful.  I chose one of my all-time favorite appetizers, calamari.  These were deep fried in an oatmeal batter, something new to me.  And they were delicious, and plentiful.  They lasted through my entire meal.

For our main courses, Lynn went with the Grilled South Shore Seafood Platter, which consists of the Catch of the Day, Shrimp, Scallops, and Calamari.  The night we were there, the Catch of the Day was Cod.  All of her food was fresh and it was quite excellent.  There was so much food we could easily have shared it.

I chose Bacon Wrapped Scallops for my entrée. They came out as four large scallops arranged on a plate, in a delectable mustard sauce.  They couldn’t have been more tender.  The mustard sauce had just the right amount of bite to it that offset the richness of the scallops.  It was the perfect combination.

Then it was time for desert.  Always leave room for desert.  They finally took my bowl of calamari away from me, and there was still some left!  For desert, Lynn chose the Chocolate Lava Cake and I chose the Chocolate Malted Mousse Cake.

My Mousse Cake was light and delectable, sitting on a wonderful vanilla sponge cake, surrounded by a fine design of raspberry swirl and topped with a gooseberry.  Lynn’s Chocolate Lava Cake was moist and rich, exactly as a chocolate cake should be.

The restaurant’s atmosphere, food, tremendous ocean views, and our waitress were all excellent.  The changes that were made at Ocean Club seem to agree with the place, as it appears to be right where it belongs.
