GAMESCOM ’11: Sony: PS3 Price Cuts for Everyone!

Sony Corporation (ADR) (Public, NYSE:SNE) just closed out their Gamescom keynote with a blow-out announcement: PlayStation 3 price cuts for everyone!

Starting right now, the price of the PS3 has dropped to $249.99 in the United States, €249.99 in Europe and ¥24,980 in Japan. Now somebody just needs to explain to them that in Euros, 249.99 is actually $360.13 US or ¥27,653.21 in Japan, our poor European brothers, always paying more.

Sony also announced a new WiFi-less PSP for €99.99, which will presumably be in the United States for $99.99. This price point is something Sony should have done two years ago. Unfortunately, it comes at the worst possible time, confusing the market between the PSP and the PSP Vita.

There’s currently no word as to what this price cut news will mean for the Vita. I can’t imagine Sony trying to sell a console and a hand-held for the exact same price. It hasn’t worked so far for Nintendo, trying to sell the Wii for $200 and the 3DS for $250.
